Seth Freeman • Stripped Down

This past Tuesday (Jan. 3, 2012), musician Seth Freeman played a stripped down show at O'Brien's Pub in Santa Monica. His set consisted of his entire new EP entitled Heart Back, plus a handful of others. At one point during the set, Seth's guitar lost amplification, but in pro-style Seth continued off mic, which I loved. It was like watching someone in your living room. Seth's new EP feels like a throwback to a time when people listed to entire albums because there was one story told across several songs. His EP does just that… and has the power to jerk a few tears if your going through tough times. For me, the stand out song off the EP is "Keep Going Down." Show Review: Seth Freeman at Summer Nights on the Boulevard 7/23/09

Seth Freeman’s CD release party coincided with Summer Nights on the Boulevard, an evening of music, dance, and art, in Atwater Village, CA. Backed by a band consisting of producer Michael Eisenstein on guitar (Letters to Cleo), Michael Wagner on bass (Mon Cul), and Erez Ginat on drums, Seth delivered his indie rock/powerpop set to a neighborhood crowd equal or greater in size to most audiences in Hollywood clubs. Seth’s stage presence was friendly, relaxed, and confident, creating a likeability factor which made having empathy for what he was singing about inviting and easy. My favorite song of the set, Speechless, was re-started 3 times for water breaks. It takes a certain talent to be able to break into a song for thirst and get away with it, yet somehow Seth does just that, giving the audience the feeling that we’re all just hanging out together. Seth’s CD, entitled “One and Only Maybe,” is a six song EP full of heartache, heartbreak, and blissful love. Look for it on iTunes within a few weeks. For more info go to Seth’s MySpace page.

Show Review: Crash Kings at The Viper Room 6/23/09

In Los Angeles, most audiences at live music clubs are comprised of people standing 10 feet back from the stage with their arms crossed, as if to say “I dare you to entertain me.” Last night at The Viper Room, in West Hollywood, that dare was taken on by Crash Kings. Playing to a packed room, the Crash Kings unleashed their powerful sound on Hollywood, which had everyone screaming and cheering. In a town that is extremely critical of bands, Crash Kings killed it.

Comprised of brothers Tony (lead vocals / keyboards) and Michael Beliveau (bass guitar), along with Jason Morris (drums), Crash Kings are a rock trio without a guitarist, with the energy of a band with multiple guitarists. Their extremely big sound is accomplished by Jason’s hard hitting style on a kit with a massive kick, Mike’s blazing talent on bass, and Tony’s secret weapon, a rare Hohner Clavinet customized with a whammy bar that can pitchbend the 60 guitar strings inside simultaneously. The Clavinet is one of less than 100 that were modified by a company called “Castlebar” back in the 70’s.

My favorite songs of the night:

“You Got Me” – This song started with some nasty distorted bass combined with Tony’s powerful voice rumbling the entire room, which was filled with bodies bobbing up and down with hands in the air.

“2nd Rate Citizen” – You won’t find this song on the band’s recently released album, but it is my favorite for showing Tony going off on his unique custom Clavinet.

“14 Arms” – I love this song live. This song unleashes an aural assault that defines the Crash Kings sound for me… and it contains the lyrics “let’s give them what they least expect,” which is exactly how the band responds to “I dare you to entertain me.”

Sagie's Show Lowdown: Lemonwilde at the Viper Room, May 14, 2009

Last week we ventured out to the Viper Room to see Lemonwilde, a relatively new, Los Angeles based band made up of five guys - Joseph Murray (vocals), Henry Pope (bass), Luke Martinez (guitar), Ter Dines (piano/synth), and the newest member drummer Adam Troughear. The band has been getting some recent buzz, being compared to Radiohead… yummy. I think they have some really great, musically complex songs. In an ipod full of new music, their songs really stood out, particularly the less breathy songs like "Just This Ashtray," "Finding Jesus in Math," and my personal favorite "Inspired Painter" (I just love the intertwined drum and bass in this song). The music is angsty, dark and somewhat experimental, but sexy rather than whiny… right up my alley.

I really wanted to like the live show, but I think the live performance fell a bit short. Don't get me wrong, the music sounded great, but there was definitely a lack of connection to the audience. It could have been the jaded Hollywood crowd, but I don’t think so. I found the band members basically looking down the whole time with no interaction with each other or the audience, no introduction of band members, and no thank you. Looking around the room I just saw blank stares. I asked two girls in the bathroom what they thought... first girl, "Oh, I wasn’t even listening"… second girl, "They sound like a band I just went to see"... not the greatest response. I saw some glimmers of hope when the singer moved forward for a second or two, and the bassist seemed like he could be quite a character.

For me, performing music that isn’t already full of energy requires some extra effort in order to connect to the audience… and these days touring is soooo important. Despite being somewhat disappointed with this show, I look forward to seeing how Lemonwilde develops their live show, and seeing another performance down the line. As I said, the music is great, but I think they need to ask themselves, “what do I need to do to make people get up and be happy to pay for cover charge, parking and drinks, rather than stay home and listen to the cd?”…I’m just sayin!!

Lemonwilde's next show is at the Echoplex on June 28th. Who knows maybe the "Eastside" love is just what they need.
